eCommerce websites, despite their commonality, are some of the toughest websites to design. There are so many moving parts to consider such as the visual design elements, the product pages, shipping, carts etc. It can feel very overwhelming, but we aim to make it simple for you. Here are some things to consider when building an eCommerce website.
1 – Match the visuals to the products
Keeping your design consistent and relevant when making an eCommerce site is a must. Everything you include in your design (colours, images, text, etc.) should align with both your brand and products. For example, if you’re a website that sells cookware, you’ll want the images to refer to cooking products, and potentially use the colours associated with hunger (like red).
2 – Take the time to create effective product pages
Lacklustre product pages, with poor images and description, will scare people away because they will be less inclined to trust a website. Although you generally want to keep images well compressed, which you still do, use high-quality images on your product page. Also, let people zoom in on them. Plus, make sure you’ve included all the relevant specifications and a detailed description of the product. The more detail you go into, the better Google will find your website. Plus, people will trust your better if your information is clear, accurate and answers their questions.
3 – Make Purchasing Easy
The world of online shopping is rife with cart abandonment. If your shopping process asks too many questions or is at all difficult, people are very quick to give up. So make sure checkout is easy. Give people the option to check out as a guest, make it easy to add or remove items from the cart, don’t ask too many questions, offer a wide range of purchase options, etc.
